Potential impacts of invasive crayfish on native benthic fish: shelter use and agonistic behaviour

چکیده
Spinycheek crayfish ( Faxonius limosus ) and signal Pacifastacus leniusculus are successful North American invasive species distributed throughout Europe. Both compete with native benthic fish for shelter. In a laboratory approach, we assessed competition shelter antagonistic interactions between these the species, stone loach Barbatula barbatula bullhead Cottus gobio ). This allows studying potential impacts of on fish. were able to gain control could successfully displace both species. For loach, presence significantly decreased their use caused several behavioural changes such as reduced activity increased hiding behaviour outside Although by bullheads was not reduced, they displayed similar changes, if less intense. Invasive showed remarkable combative against fishes, evidenced high number aggressive interactions, especially concerning loach. Our results highlight pronounced dominance over in terms under conditions, which consequently might promote latter’s exposure predation.

Competition for shelter between four invasive gobiids and two native benthic fish species
Recent invasions by non-native gobiid fish species that are ongoing in the Western European rivers Rhine and Meuse, will lead to interactions with native benthic fish species. Since both non-native gobiids and native benthic species are bottom dwelling species with a preference for shelter during at least part of their life cycle, it is likely that competition for shelter will occur between the...

Article history: Received 26 September 2016 Accepted 12 January 2017 Available online 1 March 2017 Invasive ecosystem engineers, such as dreissenid mussels, may facilitate subsequent invaders. Despite their potential ecological importance, interactions between dreissenid mussels and crayfish in the Laurentian Great Lakes have received little research attention. Invasive rusty crayfish (Orconect...

In addition to hypopigmentation of the skin and red iris colouration, albino animals also display distinct physiological and behavioural alterations. However, information on the social interactions of albino animals is rare and has mostly been limited to specially bred strains of albino rodents and animals from unique environments in caves. Differentiating between the effects of albinism and do...

Oceanic islands are among the most endemically biodiverse ecosystems in the world. They have been adversely impacted by human expansion, which affects regional biodiversity by altering the natural habitats of vulnerable, indigenous species. Birds represent a valuable indicator species of environmental change due to their ability to adapt quickly. Investigating the relationship between environme...
